98-Year-Old Veteran Donates Liver in Final Act of Service, a Historic First
Orville Allen, a distinguished veteran and educator from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, has posthumously become the oldest American to donate an organ. Allen, who passed away on May 29 at the age of 98, generously donated his liver to a 72-year-old woman, marking a significant moment in the history of organ donation. This act of kindness was facilitated by Mid-America Transplant, highlighting Allen's lifelong commitment to service.

Allen's health was robust until an unfortunate accident at his home on May 27 led to severe injuries. After a fall while clearing storm debris, he was rushed to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau with critical head injuries. Despite the medical team's efforts, Allen's condition worsened, leading his family to make the compassionate decision to donate his liver.
The decision came as a surprise due to Allen's age, yet medical evaluations confirmed the liver was suitable for transplant. Linda Mitchelle, Allen's daughter, reflected on how this final act of giving brought a sense of joy amidst their grief, embodying her father's lifelong ethos of helping others.
Before Allen, Cecil Lockhart of West Virginia held the record as the oldest organ donor at the age of 95. His liver donation in 2021 also saved a woman's life. These instances underscore a growing trend where more people, including older adults, are contributing to life-saving organ donations.
According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), last year witnessed record-breaking numbers with over 16,000 donations from deceased donors and more than 46,000 organ transplants performed. The data also highlighted that liver transplants exceeded 10,000 for the first time. However, with over 100,000 individuals awaiting organ transplants in the nation, the demand far surpasses the supply.
In response to this critical need, advancements in medical science are being explored. Notably, earlier this year in Massachusetts, Richard "Rick" Slayman became the inaugural recipient of a genetically modified pig kidney. Despite Slayman's death two months post-transplant, such efforts represent significant strides towards addressing organ shortages.
Kevin Lee, president and CEO of Mid-America Transplant, emphasized that age should not be a deterrent in organ donation decisions. Medical advancements have made it possible for older adults to contribute significantly to organ donation pools. In fact, about 12% of deceased organ donors in the early part of this year were aged 65 or older.
Dr. David Klassen, chief medical officer for UNOS, stated that organ donation from senior individuals can be successful and immensely beneficial for recipients. However, he noted that the suitability varies by organ type and many transplant centers may not consider hearts from older donors due to various factors.
Allen's legacy extends beyond his military service and educational contributions; his final act of generosity has inspired many within his community to register as organ donors. His family hopes that sharing his story will encourage more people to consider organ donation and help save lives.
Orville Allen's life was marked by service in various capacities - as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later in artillery communications with the Army 1st Cavalry Division during the Korean War. Following his military service, he dedicated nearly four decades to teaching vocational agriculture at Neelyville High School. Allen is survived by his three children, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His wife of 70 years, Geraldine, passed away in 2019.
The impact of Allen's posthumous liver donation serves as a powerful reminder of the difference one individual can make in the lives of others. It highlights not only the importance of organ donation but also celebrates a life characterized by selflessness and community service.
