6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southwestern Japan, Tsunami Advisory Issued

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan late on Monday evening, causing two small tsunamis in the region, but no major damage or injuries have been reported. The tremor hit at 9:19 PM local time (12:19 GMT) and occurred at a depth of 36 kilometres, approximately 18 kilometres off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan's Kyushu region, according to the US Geological Survey.

6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan: Tsunami Advisory and Precautionary Measures

In response to the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a warning for possible tsunami waves of up to one meter (three feet), urging the public to stay away from coastal waters. The agency emphasized that tsunamis can strike multiple times and advised people not to enter the sea or approach coastal areas.

Minor Tsunamis Detected

Two small tsunamis, measuring around 20 centimeters, were detected at two ports in the affected region. Despite the tremors and tsunami warnings, local media reported that there were no immediate injuries, and live broadcasts from the region showed calm seas with no visible damage. Vessels continued operating normally, and traffic was reported to be running as usual.

Japan's Earthquake Risk

Sitting atop four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. The nation experiences around 1,500 tremors annually, accounting for nearly 18% of the world's earthquakes. While most of these quakes are mild, their impact can vary depending on their location and depth.

Recent Earthquakes and Ongoing Warnings

This earthquake follows a deadly 7.5-magnitude tremor that struck Japan's Noto Peninsula on New Year's Day in 2024, resulting in nearly 470 deaths, many of which were elderly residents. In August 2024, the JMA raised concerns over the potential for a "megaquake" following a 7.1-magnitude tremor in the region. This quake, known as a subduction megathrust earthquake, can cause massive tsunamis and is associated with seismic activity in the Nankai Trough, an undersea fault line off Japan's Pacific coast.

Japan's Preparedness for Earthquakes

Despite the country's vulnerability to earthquakes, Japan has strict construction regulations designed to ensure that buildings can withstand strong tremors. The country regularly conducts emergency drills to prepare for major seismic events. However, the memory of Japan's catastrophic 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 still looms large. That disaster resulted in the deaths or disappearances of around 18,500 people and caused the Fukushima nuclear plant to meltdown, marking Japan's worst post-war catastrophe and the most severe nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

In March 2022, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Fukushima shook eastern Japan, killing three people and reminding the nation of its ongoing seismic risks. Tokyo itself was devastated by a massive earthquake in 1923, further underscoring the city's vulnerability to earthquakes.

Ongoing Investigation and Updates

The Japan Meteorological Agency is continuing to investigate possible links between Monday's quake and other recent seismic activity in the region. As the situation unfolds, authorities remain on high alert, ready to respond to any further developments or aftershocks.
