12 Soldiers Killed In Suicide Attack On Army Outpost In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In a devastating incident late Tuesday night, a suicide bomber targeted a joint check post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, using an explosive-laden vehicle.

The attack, occurring in the Bannu district's MaliKhel area, resulted in the tragic loss of 12 security personnel, the army's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), reported on Wednesday. The ISPR detailed that the militants attempted to breach the check post but were repelled by the troops stationed there.

The assault not only claimed lives but also caused substantial damage to the surrounding infrastructure and led to the collapse of part of the perimeter wall. Among the deceased were 10 soldiers from the security forces and two members of the Frontier Constabulary, all hailed as "12 brave sons of soil" by the ISPR. Additionally, the confrontation led to the death of six attackers, and those injured in the incident were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In response to the surge in terrorism, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan's civil and military leadership convened on Tuesday to green-light a "comprehensive military operation" aimed at quelling the terrorist elements in Balochistan. This decision, motivated by a series of fatal attacks in the province over recent months, was made during a meeting of the Federal Apex Committee, a crucial counterterrorism forum. The meeting, which saw the attendance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Army Chief Gen Syed Asim Munir, federal ministers, chief ministers, and senior government officials, was reported by The Express Tribune.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has become a focal point for terrorism, witnessing a notable increase in violence. The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) highlighted a 90 percent spike in violent incidents across Pakistan, especially in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during the third quarter of the current year, as reported by local media. This alarming trend underscores the persistent threat of terrorism in the region.

Following the attack, a sanitation operation was launched, and a curfew imposed in the affected area. Security forces and law enforcement agencies have expressed their determination to rout out terrorism, signaling a concerted effort to restore peace and order.
