1,000 people killed in Iraq in June: UN

"The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) released new casualty numbers today, saying that over 1,000 people have been killed in Iraq in June so far," Xinhua quoted UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric as saying at a daily press briefing.
"At least 757 people were killed and nearly 600 were injured due to the conflict in Nineveh, Diyala and Salah al-Din Provinces, " Dujarric said, citing the latest casualty number released by UNAMI in east Iraq between June 5-22. "The number includes verified summary executions and extra-judicial killings."
"Over 300 others were killed during the same period in Baghdad and areas in the south, many of them as a result of car bombs," the spokesperson said.
The UN report also said that abductions continue in the northern provinces and the capital Baghdad. This month, 48 Turkish citizens and around 40 Indian nationals were abducted in Mosul, Iraq's second largest city in the north of the country.
