Merging of Railway and Union budgets: What's the history?

New Delhi, July 05: In 2016, then finance minister Arun Jaitley broke a 92-year-old practice and merged the Railway Budget with the Union Budget. The Union Budget and Railway budget were presented separately in India for a long time, but in 2017 Jaitley became the first Finance Minister who presented the combined Union Budget and Railway Budget. The decision to advance the date of Budget presentation and merge the Railway Budget with the Union Budget was taken under the process of budgetary reforms controlled by the government.
