Denied Hospital Admission, Woman Gives Birth in Rickshaw in Madhya Pradesh
In a distressing incident from Neemuch district in Madhya Pradesh, a 30-year-old woman was forced to give birth in an auto-rickshaw after being denied admission to the district hospital due to the absence of an anaesthetist. The event has sparked concern and prompted an investigation by local authorities. The mother and her newborn were later admitted to the hospital and reported to be in good health, according to officials.

Dinesh Silavat, the husband of the woman and a resident of Gangrar area in Chittorgarh district, Rajasthan, shared their harrowing experience with reporters. He explained that his wife, Rajni, began experiencing labour pains around 2:30 pm on Wednesday. In urgent need of medical assistance, he transported her to the district hospital in Neemuch via rickshaw. Despite his pleas, the hospital staff refused admission and suggested they go to Udaipur, Rajasthan, instead.
As they were leaving the hospital premises around 4 pm, Rajni gave birth in the auto-rickshaw. Bystanders and some empathetic individuals provided sheets to ensure her privacy during the delivery. The hospital staff eventually admitted Rajni and her baby after becoming aware of the birth outside their facility.
Dr. Lad Dhakad, head of the maternity department at the hospital, cited the absence of an anaesthetist as the reason behind their inability to perform caesarean sections or manage high-risk pregnancies that day. He mentioned that the hospital was also understaffed for regular duties. According to Dr. Dhakad, when he was informed about Rajni's condition post his duty hours, he found her blood pressure to be dangerously high and reiterated that she needed care at a larger facility.
In response to this incident, Neemuch Collector Dinesh Jain has initiated an inquiry to ascertain the facts and determine accountability. Jain assured that appropriate action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence or misconduct.
This incident has highlighted significant gaps in healthcare accessibility and emergency response mechanisms in rural areas. It underscores the urgent need for healthcare systems to be equipped with adequate staffing and resources to handle emergencies effectively, ensuring no patient is turned away in their time of need.
