What Is Sakat Chauth?

Sakat Chauth, also known as Til Chaturthi, Sankashti Chaturthi, or Magha Chaturthi, is one of the most important fasting days in Hindu tradition. It falls on the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha (the fourth day of the waning moon) in the Magha month of the Hindu calendar.

In 2026, Sakat Chauth will be observed on January 6. The day holds deep spiritual meaning for devotees of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and bringer of good fortune.

The Story Behind Sakat Chauth

According to ancient scriptures, once Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva were playing a game of Chaupad (a traditional board game). To decide the winner fairly, they created a clay idol and brought it to life to act as a referee. Although Maa Parvati won several rounds, the clay idol mistakenly declared Lord Shiva the winner in one game.

Angered by the wrong judgment, Maa Parvati cursed the clay idol, making it lame. The idol begged for forgiveness, and while the Goddess couldn't take back the curse, she gave a way to overcome it.

Years later, in King Harishchandra's kingdom, a potter faced a strange problem-his clay pots would not bake properly. A priest advised him to place a small child inside the kiln on Sankashti Chaturthi. The child's mother, deeply worried, prayed to Lord Ganesha for her son's protection. The next morning, the potter found that the pots were perfectly baked and the child was unharmed.

When the king heard about this miracle, he asked the mother about it. She explained the power and importance of observing the Sankashti Chaturthi fast, which soon became a widely followed tradition.
