Who Is Mandal Murmu? Hemant Soren’s Proposer Joins BJP, Raises Concerns On Tribal Demographics
Just ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly elections, Mandal Murmu, who had endorsed Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren's nomination for the Barhait Assembly constituency, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Murmu, a prominent figure within the tribal community, cited concerns over demographic changes in the Santhal Pargana region and expressed dissatisfaction with the current government's policies affecting tribal culture.

What Led to Murmu's Shift?
During his joining ceremony, which was attended by Union Minister and BJP election in-charge for Jharkhand, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Murmu paid homage to tribal icons Sidhu-Kanhu and Phulo Jhano. These historical figures led the Santhal Rebellion, a 19th-century uprising against British rule and the oppressive zamindari system in Jharkhand. Murmu stated, "I will take the initiative to address demographic concerns in Santhal Pargana."
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the symbolic significance of Murmu's decision, describing it as a sign of support from the tribal ancestors. Sarma remarked, "Mandal Murmu's contribution to our party means we have received the blessings of Sidhu-Kanhu and Phulo Jhano."
BJP Welcomes Murmu Amid Rising Concerns on Demographic Shifts
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey welcomed Murmu's decision, highlighting concerns within the tribal community regarding policies under the current Jharkhand government. Dubey stated that Murmu joined the BJP without personal motives, driven instead by a commitment to addressing the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration in Santhal Pargana. He pointed out that the tribal population in the region has seen a significant decline, dropping from 45% to 25%, with an influx of Bangladeshi infiltrators altering local demographics.
According to Dubey, Murmu has pledged to work toward restoring the cultural and demographic integrity of Santhal Pargana, voicing his willingness to make sacrifices for the cause. "Mandal Murmu expressed his concern that areas once devoid of Muslim populations have now become largely Muslim settlements, owing to the impact of infiltration," Dubey stated.
