When Is Lok Sabha Speaker Election? Who Are The Front Runners?

The Lok Sabha is set to elect its new Speaker on June 26, marking the beginning of the inaugural session of the newly-elected 18th Lok Sabha, scheduled from June 24 to July 3. With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) relying on its allies for support, the choice of Speaker holds significant political weight this time.

Speculations abound regarding the next Speaker, with the Opposition INDIA bloc asserting that the post should go to NDA partners - the Janata Dal (United) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). This move underscores the pivotal role of allies in the current BJP-led government, which fell short of an outright majority in the recent Lok Sabha Elections 2024, winning 240 seats, 32 shy of the majority mark.

In the absence of a clear majority, the support of key allies like the TDP and JD(U) becomes crucial. While TDP has advocated for a joint decision on the Speaker candidate, JD(U) has hinted at supporting the BJP's nominee.

The process of electing the Speaker is outlined in Article 93 of the Constitution. As per the protocol, a Pro-tem Speaker will be appointed by the President to administer the oath of office to the newly elected MPs. The election for the new Speaker is slated for June 26, with notices for supporting candidates due by noon on June 25.

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the House, deciding on the agenda, and maintaining order during sessions. With the Speaker being an elected member of the Lok Sabha, impartiality is paramount in their role.

While reports suggest that the current Speaker, Om Birla, may retain his position, other names like Daggubati Purandeswari are also in the fray. Purandeswari, a BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh, has emerged as a potential candidate, given her political background and support within the NDA.

As the election date draws near, the choice of the Speaker will be closely watched, as it could have significant implications for the functioning of the new Lok Sabha.
