West Bengal Governor Demands Enhanced Security at Universities

A recent incident involving the rape and murder of a woman doctor has prompted West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose to call for increased security at state universities. During a virtual meeting, Bose instructed vice-chancellors to enhance safety measures for female students and staff. This directive came after expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police's handling of the case.

Governor's Call for Enhanced Security

The governor's meeting included around 30 vice-chancellors, where he emphasised the need for immediate action to protect women on campus. "The governor held an emergency meeting with the vice-chancellors today and asked them to ensure protection to female students and women staffers immediately," a source revealed.

Criticism of Police Handling

Bose criticised the Kolkata Police's response to the incident, describing it as inadequate. He labelled the crime as a "crime against humanity" and stressed the urgency of improving security measures. The governor also plans to meet with agitating doctors again on Wednesday to discuss further actions.

High Court Orders CBI Probe

In response to the incident, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision aims to ensure a thorough and impartial probe into the alleged rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Impact on Healthcare Services

The incident has led to widespread agitation among junior doctors, severely affecting state healthcare services. For five days, emergency and outpatient departments in most state-run hospitals have been non-functional due to the protests. The body of the woman doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the hospital last Friday morning, leading to the arrest of a civic volunteer on Saturday.

The governor's actions highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures in educational institutions across West Bengal. The ongoing protests by junior doctors underscore the gravity of the situation and the demand for justice and better security protocols.
