West Bengal Congress Leader Appeals for Election Commission's Aid Against Police Misconduct
In a recent development from West Bengal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the state's Congress chief and candidate for the Baharampur Lok Sabha seat, has raised concerns over alleged harassment of party workers by local police. In a letter addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday, Chowdhury called for urgent intervention to address what he describes as targeted actions by law enforcement aimed at undermining the Congress party's performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Chowdhury's correspondence outlines specific allegations against two police officers in Baharampur, accusing them of levying false and frivolous charges against Congress workers. The intent, according to Chowdhury, is clear: to negatively impact the party's electoral prospects through intimidation and unwarranted legal trouble. "I am writing to bring to your attention and seek your immediate intervention to put an end to the blatant acts of misuse of the law by the law enforcement agencies themselves," Chowdhury stated in his letter.
The Congress leader detailed incidents that he believes were orchestrated to demoralize party workers and obstruct his election campaign. He described these actions as "blatantly dirty acts of misuse of the law" aimed at harassing Congress affiliates, thereby stalling campaign efforts. Chowdhury's appeal to the Chief Election Commissioner includes a request for the immediate replacement of the implicated officers.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who leads the Congress faction in the Lok Sabha, is vying for a sixth consecutive term from Baharampur. His competition includes cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan, representing the Trinamool Congress. This electoral battle draws attention not only for its high-profile candidates but also for the allegations of political interference in law enforcement activities.
The letter to the Chief Election Commissioner underscores a critical concern regarding the neutrality and integrity of law enforcement agencies during election periods. With allegations of police involvement in political harassment coming to light, there is a growing call for oversight bodies like the Election Commission to ensure a fair and unbiased electoral process. As this situation develops, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to these serious accusations and what measures will be taken to safeguard the democratic process.
