WATCH| Beating Retreat Ceremony, Formal Wrap-Up For Republic Day 2025 Celebrations

The Beating Retreat 2025 ceremony has commenced at Kartavya Path, marking the official conclusion of the Republic Day festivities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu are present, with President Murmu arriving in her Baghi. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar is also among the dignitaries attending this significant event.

The Beating Retreat ceremony is a tradition that dates back to the early 1950s. It was developed by Major Roberts of the Indian Army as a unique display by massed bands. This event signifies a centuries-old military custom where troops would stop fighting, sheath their weapons, and return to their camps at sunset upon hearing the retreat sound.

History and Significance of Beating Retreat

The ceremony takes place on January 29, three days after Republic Day, at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi. It features musical performances by bands from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Delhi Police, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The President of India presides over this event as the supreme commander of the Armed Forces.

During the ceremony, colours and standards are cased, and flags are lowered. This creates a sense of nostalgia for times past. The Beating Retreat in India was first held in the 1950s during Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's state visit. Since then, it has become an annual tribute to honour the bravery and sacrifice of India's Armed Forces.

This ceremonial tradition not only marks the end of Republic Day celebrations but also serves as a reminder of historical military practices. It brings together various forces through music and pageantry while paying homage to those who serve the nation.

As attendees gather to witness this grand spectacle, it reflects both cultural heritage and military discipline.
