Nine Children Die in Sagar Wall Collapse; District Officials Transferred

Nine children, aged between 10 and 15, lost their lives, and two others were injured when a wall of an old house collapsed due to rain in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Sunday. The incident occurred between 8:30 am and 9:00 am near a temple during a religious event in Shahpur village under the Rehli assembly constituency, officials reported.

Immediate Government Response

Following the tragic event, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered the removal of the Sagar district collector, superintendent of police, and sub-divisional magistrate. The transfer orders were issued late at night. Deepak Arya, the Sagar collector, was transferred to the state secretariat in Bhopal as deputy secretary. Sandeep GR from the 2013 batch, currently Chhattarpur collector, will replace Arya as the new collector of Sagar.

The chief minister also ordered the transfer of Sagar SP Abhishek Tiwari IPS 2013 to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) at police headquarters in Bhopal. Vikas Kumar Sahwal IPS 2014, currently Raisen SP, will now be the new SP of Sagar. Additionally, Dr Hariom Bansal from Shahpur primary health center was suspended for negligence.

Details of the Incident

Sagar Divisional Commissioner Virendra Singh Rawat confirmed that nine children died and two were injured in the wall collapse during a religious programme. Local BJP MLA and former minister Gopal Bhargava stated that a Parthiv Shivling Nirman event was ongoing under a tent near the dilapidated house when the wall fell on it. Several of the deceased were their parents' only child.

Collector Arya explained that two children died instantly, while seven others succumbed on their way to or upon reaching the hospital. The two injured children are receiving treatment at the district hospital and are out of danger.

Identified Victims

Officials identified the deceased as Dhruv Yadav (12), Nitesh Patel (13), Ashutosh Prajapati (15), Prince Sahu (12), Parv Vishwakarma (10), Divyansh Sahu (12), Dev Sahu (12), Vansh Lodhi (10), and Hemant (10). Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X, stating, "The incident caused by the wall collapse in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh is heart-breaking. My condolences to the bereaved families of the children who lost their lives in this incident. May God give them strength to bear this pain. I wish speedy recovery of all the injured."

The Prime Minister's Office announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased's next of kin and Rs 50,000 for each injured person from PMNRF.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her sorrow over the tragedy on X: "I am deeply saddened by the heart-wrenching news of the death of many innocent children in an accident in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. I pray that God grants the grieving parents and families the strength to endure this pain. I also wish for the swift recovery of the injured children."

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Yadav announced Rs 4 lakh assistance for each deceased's family. He suspended Shahpur Nagar Panchayat's chief municipal officer and a sub-engineer for negligence and directed civil bodies across Madhya Pradesh to identify and act on dilapidated buildings.

Former Chief Minister Kamal Nath highlighted that this was the second such incident within two days. On Saturday, four children died when a wall collapsed on them while returning home from school in Rewa district. Nath urged authorities to identify weak structures amid heavy rainfall to prevent further tragedies.

Chief Minister Yadav reiterated his commitment to ensuring proper treatment for injured children and financial support for affected families. He emphasized that administrative officers must identify dilapidated buildings statewide to avoid similar incidents in future.

The government has taken swift action following these tragic events to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence. The focus remains on providing support to affected families and addressing structural vulnerabilities across Madhya Pradesh.
