Violent clashes between forces and protestors in Srinagar, Anantnag on Eid-Al-Adha
Clashes marked Eid-Al-Adha celebrations in Srinagar and Anantnag on Saturday morning. Violent clashes between youngsters and security personnel were witnessed in Srinagar's Eidgah soon after prayers on Saturday. Similar scenes were witnessed at Anantnag.
Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse protesters at Srinagar's Eidgah as violence erupted soon after prayers in Anantnag's Ahlihadees Eidgah Achahipora and Hanfia Eidgah. Clashes erupted after some youngsters staged a demonstration and started shouting slogans of 'Azadi'.
Paramilitary forces were deployed at all prayers grounds to keep strict vigil and clashes erupted between police, paramilitary forces and protestors. Protestors are said to have hurled stones and bricks on the forces who lobbed tear shells, used sound shells, pepper, and pellets.
In Srinagar, protestors are said to have displayed Burhan Wani's posters leading to clashes with security forces. Police resorted to tear gas to disperse the crowd soon after clashes broke out.Officials from the Jammu and Kashmir police said that security forces exercised maximum restraint and so far there were no reports of any casualties.
While police arrested JKLF chief Yasin Malik on Friday, chairmen of both factions of the Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, were kept under house arrest on Saturday morning. They had announced that they would join Eid prayers at the Eidgah in Srinagar.
