V Narayanan Takes Over as Secretary of Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO

V Narayanan, a prominent rocket scientist, has been appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Space. This appointment follows the completion of S Somanath's tenure next week. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned Narayanan's role as Secretary and Chairman of the Space Commission for two years starting 14 January 2025, or until further notice.

In his new role, Narayanan will also serve as the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Somanath had taken on this responsibility on 14 January 2022, for a term lasting three years. Narayanan brings nearly four decades of experience within ISRO to his new position.

Extensive Experience in Space Propulsion

Narayanan's expertise is deeply rooted in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. He played a pivotal role as Project Director for the C25 Cryogenic Project of the GSLV Mk III vehicle. Under his guidance, the team successfully developed the C25 Stage, an essential part of GSLV Mk III.

His journey with ISRO began in 1984, where he initially worked in various capacities before becoming Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). His early work focused on solid propulsion for Sounding Rockets and Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).

Academic Achievements and Career Progression

In 1989, Narayanan completed his M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering with top honours from IIT-Kharagpur. Following this achievement, he joined the Cryogenic Propulsion area at LPSC. His academic background and professional experience have significantly contributed to advancements in India's space technology.

Narayanan's extensive career at ISRO has seen him hold numerous key positions, reflecting his deep knowledge and leadership skills in space exploration. His appointment as Secretary marks a continuation of his long-standing commitment to India's space endeavours.
