Uttar Pradesh Sets Up Lightning Detection System to Prevent Monsoon Casualties
The Uttar Pradesh government is initiating an early lightning detection and warning system to reduce lightning strike casualties, particularly during the monsoon season. Officials disclosed this plan on Saturday. The Uttar Pradesh Lightning Alert Management System will be developed in three stages.

High Casualty Rates
According to the state's relief department, 84 people have died due to lightning strikes this month in Uttar Pradesh. Notably, 43 of these deaths occurred within a 24-hour period starting at 6:30 pm on July 10. This toll surpasses last year's monsoon fatalities, which were 41 according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Technological Advancements
Dr Manish Ranalkar, director of the meteorological department in Lucknow, mentioned that they were already working on a lightning detection system due to the high number of lightning-related deaths. Following directives from the chief minister to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), a state-of-the-art system based on Time of Arrival (ToA) technology will be established. This technology is more accurate in terms of time and location.
Implementation Phases
Relief Commissioner Naveen Kumar informed media persons that the first phase will see the system implemented in 37 districts. The second and third phases will cover 20 and 18 districts respectively. The entire process is expected to commence by the end of this year.
Cost and Effectiveness
The estimated cost for setting up this system is around Rs 300 crore. Dr Ranalkar added that the ToA-based system can detect and warn about potential lightning strikes at least 30 minutes in advance. This is a significant improvement over the current radar-based systems and satellite data used by IMD, which do not provide real-time warnings.
An IMD report highlighted that Uttar Pradesh ranks among the states with the highest casualties from lightning strikes in India. This new system aims to mitigate such incidents by providing timely warnings and enhancing safety measures across the state.
The initiative reflects a proactive approach by the Uttar Pradesh government to safeguard its citizens from natural calamities, particularly during vulnerable periods like the monsoon season.
