US Values Its Relationship with India, Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor Affirms After Meeting PM Modi

The United States places great importance on its relationship with India, according to US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor. After discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gor highlighted cooperation in defence, trade, and critical minerals. His visit to New Delhi comes amid ongoing tensions due to the US imposing 50% tariffs on Indian exports, affecting bilateral relations.

Gor's itinerary included meetings with key Indian officials such as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Following these discussions, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. "I'm confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership," Modi stated on social media.

Focus on Defence and Trade

During his meeting with Modi, Gor emphasised the focus on defence, trade, technology, and critical minerals. He noted that President Donald Trump views Modi as both a great leader and a personal friend. "We had a great series of meetings including with Foreign Secretary Misri, with external affairs minister Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Doval," Gor said to media outlets.

Gor also highlighted the significance of critical minerals in discussions between the two nations. This topic gains importance as China imposes export restrictions on these resources. The ambassador-designate expressed optimism about future relations under the leadership of President Trump and Prime Minister Modi.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Gor's visit follows his recent confirmation by the Senate as the US envoy to India. Accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, Gor's trip underscores the importance of this diplomatic relationship. He shared that he is honoured to serve as Trump's ambassador to India and looks forward to deepening ties.

Jaishankar also commented on his meeting with Gor, noting the global significance of the India-US relationship. "Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance," Jaishankar posted online.

Challenges in Trade Relations

The relationship between New Delhi and Washington has faced challenges due to increased tariffs on Indian goods by Trump’s administration. These tariffs include a 25% additional duty related to India's purchase of Russian crude oil. India has described these measures as unfair and unjustified.

Despite these issues, recent phone conversations between Modi and Trump have raised hopes for positive outcomes in ongoing trade negotiations. The two countries have resumed talks after a brief pause, aiming for a favourable trade deal.

Gor handed over a framed photo of Modi with Trump during a past visit to Washington DC. The photo included a handwritten message from Trump: "Mr Prime Minister, you are great," followed by his signature.

Looking Ahead

Sergio Gor was nominated as the next American envoy to India in August, reflecting Trump's trust in him for this role. Although his credentials will not be presented during this visit, Gor remains committed to fostering strong ties between the two nations.

The ambassador-designate expressed gratitude towards Trump for his nomination and confidence in him as a special envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. As discussions continue, both countries aim to navigate challenges while enhancing their strategic partnership.
