Pro-tamil groups attack 2 major film theatres in Chennai over release of Vijay-starrer Kaththi
Unidentified persons pelted stones at Satyam Theatre and Woodlands theatre late last night, damaging property, including glass panes, police said.
The attack is suspected to the handiwork of pro-Tamil groups opposed to the release of Vijay starrer 'Kaththi'. Police said they are probing all angles.
The high-budget film has been facing boycott and protests for many allege that that the owner of Lyca Productions, which produced the film, has business links with Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, who has been accused of committing war crimes in the Eelam war.
According to a The Hindu report, the Anna Salai police said the attack took place around 11.30 pm, when regular shows were going on at the theatres.
The Sathyam Cinemas in Royapettah were attacked by a gang of miscreants who arrived in two autorickshaws and an SUV. They started throwing stones at the glass facade, damaging it completely. they fled after throwing three petrol bombs.
The report says that the attack at Woodlands cinema hall complex in Royapettah happened a few minutes later. The police said that no one was hurt in the incidents.
The Hindu reports says that police have arrested five persons in connection with the attacks have deployed policemen at these cinema halls to prevent more untoward incidents.
