Tripura Opposition Leader Denies Allegations of Secret Understanding with BJP in Assembly Polls

Following the Assembly elections in Tripura earlier this year, a controversy has emerged surrounding allegations made by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPIM. The party accused Tipra Motha, led by MLA Animesh Debbarma, of having a 'secret understanding' with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, Debbarma vehemently denied these claims on Sunday.

In the February elections for the 60-member House, BJP won 32 seats while its ally, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), secured one seat. On the other hand, CPIM and Congress who fought together managed to win only 11 and 3 seats respectively. Despite contesting in only 42 constituencies as opposed to all sixty seats in contention, Tipra Motha emerged as a significant player winning thirteen seats and becoming the main opposition party.

The Allegations

These election results prompted veteran CPIM leader Manik Sarkar to accuse Tipra Motha of having a ‘secret understanding’ with BJP which allegedly helped it win. Responding to these accusations, Debbarma expressed his respect for Sarkar who had served as chief minister for twenty years but dismissed his claims. He went on to liken Sarkar's assertions to an old man behaving like a child and stated that they lost many seats due to CPIM's actions rather than any alleged alliance with BJP.

The Impact of Triangular Battle

Debbarma also pointed out that not just their party but even BJP suffered losses due to what he termed as 'the triangular battle'. This term likely refers to competition between three major political parties or alliances during elections which can often split votes leading to unexpected outcomes or losses for some parties involved.

In conclusion, the aftermath of the Assembly elections in Tripura has led to a political controversy involving allegations of secret alliances and vote splitting. While CPIM leader Manik Sarkar accuses Tipra Motha of having a secret understanding with BJP, Animesh Debbarma denies these claims attributing their loss as well as that of BJP to the 'triangular battle'. This situation underscores the complex nature of Indian politics where alliances can shift quickly and outcomes can be influenced by various factors beyond just party policies or candidate popularity.
