Prime Minister Modi expressed deep sadness over Benegal's demise, recognising his profound impact on Indian cinema. "His works will continue to be admired by people from different walks of life," he posted on X, offering condolences to Benegal's family and admirers.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge praised Benegal's significant contributions to the art form through thought-provoking storytelling and dedication to social issues. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described him as a visionary filmmaker who brought India's stories to life with depth and sensitivity.

Legacy of Shyam Benegal

Benegal was instrumental in ushering in a new era of Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s with films like "Ankur," "Mandi," and "Manthan." He passed away at 90 in a Mumbai hospital after battling chronic kidney disease. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur noted that Benegal changed the direction of Indian cinema with his impactful films.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee expressed heartbreak over Benegal's passing, calling him a visionary who redefined storytelling. "It was an absolute honor to have worked with him," Bajpayee shared on X, adding that Benegal's legacy will live on through his stories.

Akshay Kumar expressed his sorrow upon hearing about Benegal's death, describing him as one of India's finest filmmakers. Kajol also paid tribute on Instagram, acknowledging Benegal's immeasurable contributions to Indian cinema.

Karan Johar thanked Benegal for pushing boundaries and creating pride in Indian cinema. Sudhir Mishra praised Benegal for capturing the poetry of ordinary lives through his films. Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi also mourned the loss of one of India's greatest intellectuals.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Odisha's former chief minister Naveen Patnaik offered condolences. Kumar noted that Benegal's demise left a void in art and filmmaking, while Patnaik described him as a doyen of Indian cinema.

Director Sandip Ray shared personal memories of Benegal, recalling their warm bond and how Benegal made a documentary on his father, Satyajit Ray. Sandip expressed shock at the news of Benegal's passing, remembering their unique relationship.

Benegal died at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital at 6:38 pm after suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years. His daughter Pia confirmed this information. He is survived by his daughter and wife Nira Benegal. Just nine days before his death, actors gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday, marking a poignant farewell to the legendary filmmaker.
