Tragic Death Of MBBS Student In Gujarat: Ragging Leads To Fatal Collapse
In a heartbreaking incident at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Patan, Gujarat, an 18-year-old MBBS student, Anil Methaniya, died after reportedly being subjected to a brutal ragging session by senior students. The first-year student, originally from a village in Gujarat, collapsed on Saturday night after being forced to stand for hours by senior students as part of the hazing ritual, as reported by News 18.
The Incident: According to eyewitness accounts from fellow students, Methaniya, along with a group of other junior students, was made to stand for nearly three hours by a group of eight senior students. The juniors were allegedly instructed to introduce themselves one by one, while being forced to remain standing without moving or expressing discomfort.

The prolonged standing is believed to have caused Methaniya to faint, with fellow students rushing him to the hospital immediately. However, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was declared dead shortly after reaching the facility.
Eyewitness Accounts: One of the junior students, who wished to remain anonymous, described the ordeal: "We were made to stand for hours, told not to move or speak out. Eventually, one of us, Anil, collapsed. We tried to help him and rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late."
Family's Grief: Anil's cousin, Dharmendra Methaniya, expressed deep grief over the loss. "I was informed that my cousin had been hospitalized after collapsing. When I arrived, I was devastated to learn that he had passed away," he said. The family is now awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death but has stated that they believe the ragging played a key role in his demise, as per news reports.
College and Police Response: The college administration has launched an investigation into the incident. Dr. Hardik Shah, the dean of GMERS Medical College, confirmed that the anti-ragging committee was probing the incident and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible if the allegations of ragging are substantiated.
"We deeply regret this tragic loss. We are committed to taking immediate and appropriate action. Ragging is strictly prohibited at our institution," said Dr. Shah.
Local police have also filed a case of accidental death and have sent Methaniya's body for postmortem to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have emphasized that if ragging is found to be a contributing factor, legal actions will be pursued against the senior students involved.
Growing Concerns Over Ragging in Colleges: This incident brings attention once again to the persistent issue of ragging in educational institutions, despite efforts by colleges and universities to curb the practice. The anti-ragging laws in India were put in place to prevent such incidents, but cases like these continue to raise concerns about the effectiveness of enforcement.
Educational authorities are urged to take further steps to ensure the safety and well-being of students, particularly in medical colleges where stress and pressure are already high for young students adjusting to rigorous academic environments.
As the investigation continues, the tragic death of Anil Methaniya has left his family, friends, and the college community in shock, calling for justice and a stronger commitment to preventing such acts of violence against students in the future.
