Tokhan Sahu: Chhattisgarh's Lone Voice in Modi 3.0 Government

In a significant political development, Tokhan Sahu, a first-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Chhattisgarh, was inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers on Sunday. Sahu's appointment as the Union Minister of State marks a notable moment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chhattisgarh, mirroring the representation level from the state seen in the previous BJP-led Central government. Sahu emerged victorious from the Bilaspur Lok Sabha seat in the recent elections, highlighting the BJP's continued dominance in Chhattisgarh since its formation in 2000.

Sahu: Chhattisgarhs Representation

The BJP has shown consistent electoral success in Chhattisgarh, securing 10 out of 11 seats in the 2004, 2009, and 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The party improved its tally to 10 seats in the 2024 elections from 9 out of 11 seats won in 2019. Speculation had been rife about which MP from Chhattisgarh would be chosen as Union Minister of State, with several senior leaders' names being floated in political circles. Among them were Brijmohan Agrawal, who won the Raipur Lok Sabha seat with a significant margin, and sitting MPs Vijay Baghel and Santosh Pandey, who retained their seats in Durg and Rajnandgaon respectively.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai had expressed optimism regarding the inclusion of BJP MPs from Chhattisgarh in ministerial positions at the Centre. However, he noted that the final decision would rest with Prime Minister Modi. In a move that surprised many, 55-year-old Sahu, belonging to the influential Other Backward Caste (OBC), was chosen for the ministerial role, overtaking more experienced party members. This decision underscores Modi's previous term selections, where Renuka Singh, then MP from Surguja, was appointed Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs.

Sai, who served as Union Minister of State for Steel and Mines during Modi's first term (2014-19), extended his congratulations to Sahu following the swearing-in ceremony of the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Delhi. He remarked that Sahu's induction into the Union Cabinet is a proud moment for Chhattisgarh and expressed joy for the entire state. "We will work together to fulfil the resolution of a developed India and developed Chhattisgarh, taking the country and the state to new heights of development," an official statement quoted Sai as saying.

This development not only highlights Sahu's ascent within national politics but also reflects the strategic importance of Chhattisgarh in India's political landscape. The BJP's stronghold in the state has been further solidified with Sahu's appointment, indicating a continued focus on leveraging regional representation to bolster national governance objectives.
