Naveen Patnaik and Mamata Banerjee

The agenda of the meeting between Mamata and the Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik has not been made public. However sources say that both would discuss a plan to form a regional alliance in a bid to keep the BJP at bay. The BJP has been eyeing both the states of Odisha and West Bengal.

During her three day visit, Mamata would also address a public meeting in Bhubaneshwar. She is likely to take on the BJP and urge the people not to vote for the party in 2019. The meeting with Patnaik would also deliberate on the next President of India.

For the BJP to select a President of its choice, it would need the support of either the AIADMK or BJD. The opposition led by the Congress has already been deliberating with other parties about the next President of India. The opposition would like to push the BJP for a consensus candidate rather than a person of its choice.
