TN ministers not allowed to meet Sasikala in jail

The three ministers D Srivasan, Sengottaiyan and Sellur Raju had travelled from Chennai to meet Sasikala who is lodged in jail after she was convicted in the disproportionate assets case.

Bengaluru, Feb 21: Three ministers in the newly sworn in government of the Tamil Nadu were not allowed to meet Sasikala Natarajan at the central jail in Bengaluru. The three ministers D Srivasan, Sengottaiyan and Sellur Raju had travelled from Chennai to meet Sasikala who is lodged in jail after she was convicted in the disproportionate assets case.

As per the orders of the Director General of Prisons, permission to meet a prisoner can be given only twice a week. However Sasikala who has met with several persons since her conviction had already exhausted her quota for the week.

The three ministers had sought an appointment with Sasikala. However after they waited for nearly three hours to meet her, they were told that permission could not be granted and they needed to come back next week after taking an appointment.

Sasikala has had a host of visitors since she was jailed on Wednesday. Her relative and advocates have met her several times since she was directed by the Supreme Court to go to jail. Earlier this week, Sasikala is said to have filed an application seeking a transfer from the Bengaluru jail to a prison in Chennai.

The application was filed with the jail authorities who may forward the same to the home department of Karnataka. However according to legal experts such an application needs to be filed before the Special Court which conducted the trial in the disproportionate assets case.
