TMC Councillor Ends Hunger Strike After Leadership's Assurances

In a recent development within the political landscape of Kolkata, Monalisa Banerjee, a councillor from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), concluded her six-day hunger strike. The strike was initiated due to grievances against internal party dynamics, specifically allegations against another local leader, Debasish Banerjee, for obstructing her duties. This incident sheds light on the internal conflicts within the TMC, especially in the run-up to the crucial Lok Sabha elections.

Councillor Ends Strike After Assurances

Monalisa Banerjee, representing Ward Number 49 in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), embarked on this protest last Sunday. Her primary grievance was the establishment of an additional election office within her ward by a faction led by Debasish Banerjee, without her knowledge. This move was perceived as an undermining of her authority and an attempt to sideline her, despite her switch from Congress to TMC in 2020.

The ward in question falls under the Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency, a significant area given its representation by senior TMC leader and incumbent MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay. The internal strife reached a peak when Monalisa staged a demonstration outside Bandyopadhyay's office, coinciding with the installation of a CCTV camera near her own office premises. She received assurances from Bandyopadhyay that no new election office would be established and that she would face no further obstructions in her work.

Despite these assurances, the inauguration of the new election office went ahead, with supporters of the TMC MP reportedly present. This development led to Monalisa's hunger strike as a form of protest against what she saw as betrayal and sabotage within party ranks during a pivotal electoral period.

Debasish Banerjee, when approached for comments, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and expressed his intention to seek resolution through party leadership. In a turn of events, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh met with Monalisa Banerjee, offering reassurances that her concerns would be addressed. Ghosh affirmed that Banerjee would remain an integral part of the election-related activities spearheaded by Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

This incident not only highlights the challenges of internal party dynamics but also underscores the complexities of political maneuvering in the lead-up to elections. The resolution following Monalisa Banerjee's hunger strike may have quelled immediate tensions but also signals deeper issues within party structures that may need addressing to ensure unity and focus during electoral contests.
