Congress Critiques Hazratbal Mosque Controversy, Calls for Accountability from Responsible Parties

The Jammu and Kashmir Congress described the recent controversy at the Hazratbal mosque as deeply regrettable. The party emphasised that those who instigated the issue must be held accountable. They reiterated their commitment to constitutional principles, which ensure religious freedom and advocate for non-interference in religious matters.

The incident at the Hazratbal shrine is seen as unfortunate and unnecessary by the Congress. Religious sites are meant to be places of faith and purity, promoting messages of humanity, unity, peace, and harmony. Such places should not become embroiled in political controversies, according to a statement from the party.

Controversy Over National Emblem

The controversy erupted when a plaque featuring the national emblem was placed inside the shrine. Devotees expressed outrage, arguing that displaying any figure or symbol within a mosque contradicts Islamic monotheism. Following Friday prayers, unidentified individuals vandalised and removed the plaque, prompting police action.

The Congress questioned the necessity of displaying symbols and nameplates of political leaders at revered religious sites. They stated that such actions are inappropriate, especially in Muslim religious places. The party demanded answers from those whose personal or political motives have caused unrest among believers.

Call for Resolution

The Congress stressed that the issue should be resolved considering religious sentiments and constitutional principles to uphold peace and harmony. They highlighted their respect for national symbols but noted that these should not be displayed in religious places.

In their statement, the Congress clarified they do not condone violence or law violations to address grievances but support peaceful protests against injustices. They questioned what provoked this incident and who was responsible for it.

Police have registered a case following the vandalism of the plaque. The Congress urged for a resolution that respects both religious sentiments and constitutional traditions to maintain order and peace.
