This man from Kerala can predict rain with the help of rain gauge

Meet MP Vimal Kumar, (72), from Muttil village in Wayanad district in Kerala who has for the past 34 years, meticulously recorded the rainfall. The first thing Kumar does, after waking up at 6 AM is to check the rain gauge. The rain gauge consists of a simple metal funnel and accompanying calibrated measuring cylinder which is installed in front of his house. After taking down the daily rainfall measurement at 6 AM, Kumar diligently enters the readings in a ledger book he has printed for the purpose since 1983.

Also, Indian Meteorological Department regional director S Sudevan commends Vimal Kumar's endeavour.

Vimal Kumar owns a 30-acre coffee plantation and many rain-dependent ryots of Muttil and neighbouring areas turn to him on all things related to weather forecast.

According to Kumar,"I began recording daily rainfall data in 1983 after observing that the yield of coffee is heavily dependent on the timing and quantity of rain which is critical for blossoming and fruit setting. Blossom showers of at least 25 mm, ideally by mid-February, and 'backing showers' of 37 mm at least within 30 days of blossom showers, helps a lot in fruit development and retention of coffee."

He can now predict the quantity of rain in mm by just watching the precipitation and its duration.

If at all, Kumar is not around, he makes sure that one of his relatives record the rainfall and update him the ledger ince he is back.

As per his data, the maximum annual rainfall which was recorded in 2014 at 2,968.2 mm while a minimum of 1,261.1 mm was recorded in 2016. The oldest recording in his ledger is in 1983 when annual rainfall measured 2,328 mm.
