Teesta's NGO used Rs 1.40 crore HRD donation for personal use- SC told

Social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband siphoned off Rs 3.85 crore for their personal use from the Rs 9.75 crore they had received as donation for their NGO.

In an 83 page affidavit, the police have said that they had sought documents relating to the Centre for Justice Trust and Sabrang, but the couple were non-cooperative.
After examining the bank details of the two NGOs it was found that a total of Rs 9.75 crore had been received as donation out of which Rs 3.85 crore had been utilised for personal use.
Further the police state that Rs 1.40 crore granted by the HRD ministry in 2011 and 2012 had been used for personal expenses.
The police point out that there were hardly any funds in the accounts of the two NGOs prior to 2007. It was after the NGOs advertised for funds to set up a Museum of Resistance for the Gujarat riot victims did money begin to pour in.
The police say that the couple had been non-cooperative.
Despite several requests they had not furnished relevant documents. Hence their custodial interrogation is needed, the Gujarat police also told the Supreme Court.
