TDP-BJP Alliance Talks: Naidu Meets Shah, Explores Poll Pact Prospects
Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the possibility of an alliance between the BJP and TDP for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.
In a significant development, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to explore the possibility of forming an alliance between the BJP and the regional party for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP was previously part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) but exited in 2018 when Naidu served as the state's chief minister.

Mutual Interest, but Seat-Sharing Remains a Challenge
Sources close to both parties have indicated a willingness to join hands, but the success of the alliance hinges on reaching a mutually agreeable seat-sharing arrangement. The recent meeting between Naidu and Shah, the second in as many months, has raised hopes for a potential partnership. TDP leaders have emphasized the urgency of finalizing the alliance, as any delay could confuse party workers and supporters.
Jana Sena Party's Role and BJP's Expansion Plans
Actor Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party, a current member of the NDA, has already joined forces with the TDP and has been urging the BJP to follow suit. Kalyan also participated in the meeting with Shah. Meanwhile, the BJP has been actively working to expand the NDA in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, aiming for a bigger victory. The party's goal is to secure 370 seats on its own and 400 with allies, and it believes that forming alliances with regional parties that share similar agendas will be beneficial.
Differences over Seat Allocation
Despite the positive developments, there are still some differences between the TDP and the BJP, particularly regarding the number of seats the BJP will contest in Andhra Pradesh, where it currently has a limited presence. The state has 25 Lok Sabha and 175 Assembly seats, and the BJP is keen to contest eight to 10 parliamentary constituencies. Sources within the TDP, however, suggest that the BJP may contest only five to six Lok Sabha seats, with the Jana Sena contesting three and the TDP taking the remaining seats.
Jagan Mohan Reddy's Support for Modi Government
Adding complexity to the situation is the presence of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, president of the YSR Congress, who has consistently supported the Modi government's agenda in Parliament and shares a positive personal relationship with its senior leaders. This dynamic further complicates the BJP's efforts to form alliances in the state.
As the Lok Sabha elections approach, the TDP and the BJP continue to negotiate the terms of a potential alliance in Andhra Pradesh. While both parties recognize the benefits of working together, the challenge of reaching a mutually acceptable seat-sharing arrangement remains. The outcome of these discussions will have a significant impact on the political landscape of the state and the broader NDA alliance.
