Suvendu Adhikari Family Tree: Meet The Powerful Political Dynasty Behind Bengal’s New BJP Chief Minister

As Suvendu Adhikari takes charge as West Bengal's first BJP Chief Minister after the party's historic 2026 victory, public attention has increasingly shifted toward the influential political family that shaped his rise. Known as one of Bengal's strongest regional political dynasties, the Adhikari family has held influence across Purba Medinipur for decades through multiple leaders occupying key political positions.

Suvendu Adhikari currently serves as the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal and remains the most prominent face of the Adhikari political family based in Kanthi, also known as Contai, in Purba Medinipur district.

At the centre of the family stands Sisir Adhikari, Suvendu Adhikari's father and one of the senior-most political figures from the region. Sisir Adhikari served as a Member of Parliament from Kanthi and also held the post of Union Minister of State for Rural Development during the Manmohan Singh government. He remained associated with the Trinamool Congress for years before later moving closer to the BJP alongside his sons.

Suvendu's mother, Gayatri Adhikari, has largely stayed away from active politics but is regarded as the matriarch of the influential family.

The Adhikari family became particularly well known in West Bengal politics because multiple members simultaneously built political careers across Parliament, the Assembly and local bodies.

Suvendu Adhikari emerged as the most influential among the brothers after gaining prominence during the 2007 Nandigram movement, which became a turning point in Bengal politics. He later served as Transport Minister in Mamata Banerjee's cabinet before dramatically joining the BJP in 2020.

His political stature expanded significantly after defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021 and later winning both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 elections, helping BJP form its first government in West Bengal.

Another key member of the family is Dibyendu Adhikari, Suvendu Adhikari's brother, who served both as an MLA and as Member of Parliament from Tamluk. Like Suvendu, Dibyendu was initially associated with the Trinamool Congress before shifting toward the BJP.

The third politically active brother, Soumendu Adhikari, has played a major role in local politics within Purba Medinipur. He previously served as Chairman of the Kanthi Municipality and has long handled organisational responsibilities for the family's political network in the district.

Political observers often describe the Adhikari family as one of the most organised regional political blocs in Bengal. Their influence remains strongest in Kanthi and the wider Purba Medinipur region, where the family built support first through the Congress, later through the Trinamool Congress and now under the BJP banner.

The family's coordinated political structure across Parliament, Assembly seats and municipal bodies helped create a strong regional power centre that remained influential despite multiple shifts in Bengal's political landscape over the years.

Suvendu Adhikari is currently unmarried, another aspect of his personal life that often draws public curiosity alongside his political rise.

With BJP now leading the government in West Bengal for the first time, the Adhikari family's political network, regional dominance and decades-long influence in Purba Medinipur have once again come into sharp focus across Bengal politics.
