J-K, Punjab, BSF Officials Convene to Fortify Security Grid Along IB

Senior BSF and police officials from Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab met on Thursday to discuss ways to share real-time inputs and strengthen the anti-infiltration grid along the International Border. This meeting in Kathua district followed an ambush by terrorists that resulted in the deaths of five army personnel three days ago.

Fortifying Security Along IB

The high-level coordination conference, attended by officers from central agencies, aimed to bolster security and enhance coordination among the Border Security Force (BSF), Punjab Police, and Jammu and Kashmir Police. A police spokesperson stated that the primary agenda was to review the current security situation comprehensively and devise robust strategies to counter challenges.

Focus on Strengthening Coordination

The meeting highlighted the importance of coordinated patrolling and deploying advanced technology, including drones and night-vision devices, to monitor and secure the border effectively. Officers stressed the need for inter-agency cooperation and real-time information sharing to dismantle narcotics networks. Following presentations by concerned police and BSF officers from J&K and Punjab, in-depth discussions addressed key security concerns.

Officials reviewed the security grid along the IB in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, focusing on measures to counter infiltration from Pakistan. The meeting, chaired by BSF Special Director General, Western Command, Y B Khuraia, took place at District Police Lines in Kathua. Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police R R Swain and his Punjab counterpart Gaurav Yadav were among those present at the more than three-hour-long meeting.

Addressing Smuggling Concerns

The menace of border smuggling, narcotics, arms, and contraband was deliberated upon. Officials reviewed recent seizures and intelligence inputs, identifying key smuggling routes and methods. The meeting emphasized strengthening checkpoints, increasing frisking operations, and enhancing canine unit capabilities.

In light of discussions, several strategic initiatives were proposed to augment the security framework along the border. To foster better coordination between BSF and police forces of Punjab and J&K, regular joint training sessions and drills were recommended. This comes at a time when terror activity has increased in Jammu region with terrorists carrying out five attacks within a month between June 9 and July 8.

Recent Terror Activities

Officials believe that terrorists infiltrated through routes in Jammu that were active during peak militancy over two decades ago. The Monday ambush occurred on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar mountain road near Badnota village in Kathua. More than 60 people have been detained for questioning as a massive search for the terrorists entered its fourth day on Thursday.

The interstate security review meeting came against the backdrop of information suggesting that terrorists behind Monday's ambush could have infiltrated through the International Border into Kathua or Samba districts in Jammu or Pathankot in Punjab. Strengthening coordination among police and border guarding agencies was discussed in detail with a focus on countering terror threats, weapon smuggling, and narcotics trafficking.

The officers emphasized coordinated patrolling and deploying advanced technology like drones for effective border monitoring. They also stressed inter-agency cooperation for dismantling narcotics networks. Following presentations by concerned police and BSF officers from J&K and Punjab, key security concerns were addressed through in-depth discussions.

The meeting underscored the importance of real-time input sharing among police forces to counter infiltration effectively. It also highlighted enhancing synergy among BSF, Punjab Police, and Jammu & Kashmir Police to tackle terror threats more efficiently. Officials believe terrorists reached dense forests of Machedi connecting Basantgarh in Udhampur and Bhaderwah in Doda district after infiltrating. The recent increase in terror activities necessitated this high-level coordination conference to address emerging threats comprehensively.

The meeting concluded with several strategic initiatives proposed to enhance border security.
