Stone Pelting Disrupts The Sabarmati Report Screening at Jawaharlal Nehru University Amidst Allegations

A film screening at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was disrupted on Thursday evening when stones were allegedly thrown at attendees, according to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The right-wing student group claimed that some students suffered minor injuries, causing a temporary halt in the screening before it resumed.

Allegations and Accusations

The ABVP accused members of Left-affiliated organisations of orchestrating the incident. They condemned the attack, labelling it as an act by anti-Bharat and anti-Hindu forces. "This event was an attempt to unveil the truth and spark discussions. The intolerance and insecurity shown by these elements reflect their inability to handle alternative narratives," stated the ABVP.

JNUSU president Dhananjay dismissed these claims, suggesting that the ABVP staged the incident for publicity. He argued that their efforts to turn an unsuccessful film into a hit had failed. "Their dramatics, including media intrusions and false accusations, have backfired," he said, noting that the targeted room belongs to Umesh Chandra Ajmira, ABVP's presidential candidate for 2024.

Further Reactions

Yogesh Kumar, president of Sabarmati Hostel, criticised what he described as an aggressive intrusion by ABVP members during the screening. He alleged that they spread rumours about stone-pelting from the hostel and then entered with a group of 20-30 people and media cameras. Kumar claimed they tried to forcefully enter a room, harass its resident, and record footage without consent.

The JNU administration has not yet released a statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Rajeshwar Kant Dubey, president of JNU's ABVP wing, mentioned that they have filed a complaint with the university administration and plan to approach Delhi Police.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue to blame each other for the disruption. The incident has sparked debates about freedom of expression and security on campus.
