Samajwadi Party Names Candidates for Three UP Assembly Bypolls
In a significant political development, the Samajwadi Party has announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in Uttar Pradesh. These elections are set to take place simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections across four assembly constituencies. The party has chosen Avadhesh Kumar Verma for Dadraul, Rakesh Yadav for Gainsari, and Vijay Singh Gond for Duddhi. However, the candidate for Lucknow East remains undecided, as confirmed by SP's chief spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary.

The by-elections are scheduled in phases, with Dadraul voting on May 13 during the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Lucknow East will follow on May 20, Gainsari on May 25, and Duddhi on June 1, aligning with the subsequent phases of the general elections. This strategic scheduling indicates the importance of these constituencies in the broader electoral landscape.
The necessity for these by-elections arose from the vacancies left by the passing of sitting MLAs and a disqualification. The Lucknow East seat became available after the death of Ashutosh Tandon on November 9, 2023. Tandon, a three-time MLA and a Cabinet minister in Yogi Adityanath's first government, was 63 at his passing.
Dadraul's seat was vacated following BJP MLA Manvendra Singh's death on January 5 after a prolonged illness at age 70. Singh, who had a long tenure with the Congress before joining BJP in 2017, retained his seat in the 2022 polls. Similarly, Gainsari's representation ended with the demise of Samajwadi Party MLA Shiv Pratap Yadav on January 26, at age 74. Yadav was a four-time MLA from Gainsari.
The Duddhi constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribes, is open following the disqualification of BJP's Ramdular Gond after his conviction in a rape case. Sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for an incident occurring nine years ago, Gond was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh assembly in December 2023.
According to the Representation of the People Act, any lawmaker sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more shall be disqualified from the date of such conviction and remain disqualified for another six years after serving their sentence. This legal framework underscores the gravity of Gond's disqualification and its implications for political representation in Duddhi.
The upcoming by-elections in Uttar Pradesh are poised to be a critical juncture for all parties involved. With candidates now declared for three out of four constituencies by the Samajwadi Party, attention turns to their campaign strategies and how they will address the issues leading to these vacancies. The results of these by-elections will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh.
