Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Denies ‘Pakistan Link’ Claims, Cites Modi Praise on Stage

Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of jailed activist Sonam Wangchuk, has criticised security forces for the violence during statehood protests in Leh. She refuted claims linking Wangchuk to Pakistan or financial misconduct. Wangchuk, a key figure in the Ladakh agitation, is currently detained in Jodhpur prison under the National Security Act (NSA) following violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.

Angmo highlighted that Wangchuk has long protested peacefully, adopting Gandhian methods. However, she blamed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for escalating tensions on September 24, leading to four deaths. The police claimed self-defence after protesters turned violent and attacked a local BJP office. Angmo expressed frustration over her inability to communicate with Wangchuk since his detention.

Allegations of Pakistan Links

Responding to allegations by Ladakh UT police chief SD Singh Jamwal about Wangchuk's supposed Pakistan connections, Angmo clarified that his visit to Pakistan was for a climate conference organised by Dawn Media and the United Nations. She emphasised that all international trips were at the invitation of reputable institutions. "We attended a conference organised by the United Nations, and it was on climate change," she stated.

The event in question was part of multinational cooperation efforts involving organisations like ICIMOD. Angmo questioned attempts to portray Wangchuk negatively, noting his contributions to Indian Army shelters and advocacy against Chinese goods. She challenged the NSA charges against him as unjustified.

Financial Misconduct Claims

Angmo also addressed accusations of financial irregularities involving their institutions. She denied that HIAL accepted foreign donations without proper clearance, asserting that funds were payments for technological services. "We have service agreements stating this is a consulting assignment," she explained.

HIAL reportedly sustains itself through innovations like ice stupas and passive solar buildings without charging fees from its 400 students. Angmo mentioned their application for UGC registration in 2022 and claimed delays were due to administrative stalling.

Protest Dynamics

Angmo criticised security forces' response during the protests, questioning why CRPF opened fire on peaceful demonstrators. She argued that tear gas provoked stone-pelting from youth, escalating violence. Videos purportedly show students protesting peacefully before CRPF intervention.

She defended Wangchuk's remarks referencing Nepal and Bangladesh protests as misinterpreted examples of unresponsive governments leading to revolutions. Angmo insisted his words were mistranslated and reiterated his commitment to peaceful protest.

Wangchuk abandoned his hunger strike after condemning violence on September 24. Angmo stressed he merely reminded the BJP-led NDA government of promises made to Ladakhis while maintaining peaceful protest intentions.

Development Concerns

Angmo emphasised that Wangchuk supports development but advocates for locals' involvement through Sixth Schedule provisions for mindful progress. Following September 4 violence, SECMOL's FCRA licence was revoked due to alleged financial discrepancies.
