Solar Eclipse (Surya Grahan) 2024: Date, India Timings, Live Streaming Details & More

The total eclipse on Monday will mark a historic event for the western and northern regions of New York State, a phenomenon not witnessed in nearly a century.

The path of totality, a narrow corridor where the Moon completely blocks the Sun, traverses various cities, sparking widespread excitement and anticipation throughout the USA.

Solar Eclipse 2024 Where To Watch

What is a Solar Eclipse?

Eclipses occur due to a spatial alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth. This precise arrangement causes one celestial body to obscure another. Depending on the positioning of the moon relative to the sun and Earth, either the moon casts its shadow onto Earth or vice versa.

During a lunar eclipse, such as the recent one witnessed across much of the Western hemisphere in late March, all three align with Earth sandwiched in between. This alignment sometimes allows observers to witness Earth's shadow, illuminated by the sun's rays, moving across the moon's surface.

The alignment reverses during a solar eclipse. As the moon orbits Earth, it passes between the planet and the sun in a manner that appears to place it directly in front of the sun, briefly blocking its light. With the sun obscured by the moon, a shadow is cast onto Earth.

Is it visible in India?

People in North America, including Mexico, the United States, and Canada, along with Western Europe, the Atlantic and Pacific regions, Central America, the Arctic, and the northernmost parts of South America, as well as the Northwestern region of England and Ireland, can enjoy the celestial spectacle.

However, the rare astronomical phenomenon won't be visible from India.

Solar Eclipse Timings

According to Indian Standard Time (IST), the eclipse will commence at 09:12 pm on Monday, with totality beginning at 10:08 pm and concluding at 2:22 am on April 9. The totality will first be observed along Mexico's Pacific coast around 11:07 am PDT, then move towards Maine, ending at approximately 1:30 pm PDT.

It has to be noted that the totality will last only four minutes. The duration of totality is four minutes and 27 seconds.
