Sikh Officers Turban Triggers Controversy in West Bengal

IPS Officer's Response

IPS officer Jaspreet Singh expressed his anguish and disappointment over the incident. He questioned the BJP workers, "Just because I am wearing a turban, you people are calling me a Khalistani? Is this what you have learned? If a police officer wears a turban and performs his duty honestly, he becomes a Khalistani for you? Shame on you!"

Chief Minister's Condemnation

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the incident, stating that the BJP's divisive politics had crossed constitutional boundaries. She expressed solidarity with the Sikh community and denounced the attempt to undermine their reputation. Banerjee asserted that the state government would take stern lawful measures to protect Bengal's social harmony.

BJP's Denial and Sikh Community's Protest

The BJP denied the allegations, claiming that the police officer was not performing his duties as per the Constitution. However, members of the Sikh community staged demonstrations in Kolkata and Asansol to protest against the alleged Khalistani jibe.

Police and Trinamool Congress' Response

The Additional Director General (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) of South Bengal, Supratim Sarkar, condemned the incident as a deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage the religious feelings of the Sikh community. The ruling Trinamool Congress shared a video on social media, alleging that it was Adhikari who had used the 'Khalistani' slur against the officer.

West Bengal Police's Statement

The West Bengal Police expressed outrage over the incident and asserted that the Leader of the Opposition had called the Sikh IPS officer 'Khalistani.' The police condemned the attack on the officer's religious identity and beliefs and initiated stern legal action.

Adhikari's Denial and BJP's Counter-Allegations

Suvendu Adhikari denied the allegations and accused the TMC of trying to divert attention from the developments in Sandeshkhali. The Bengal BJP alleged that the state police was turning into political pawns of the TMC and accused the Sikh IPS officer of violating court orders.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions and political divisions in West Bengal. The alleged use of derogatory religious slurs against a police officer performing his duties raises concerns about the erosion of mutual respect and tolerance in society. It is crucial for political parties and leaders to uphold constitutional values and refrain from divisive rhetoric that could incite hatred and violence.
