Shivaji Hailed as Inspiration for Hindavi Swaraj by RSS Leader Hosabale
Chhatrapati Shivaji was more than a Maratha king; he symbolised Hindavi Swaraj, according to RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale. On Wednesday, he emphasised the importance of educating people about Shivaji's contributions. He noted that post-Independence efforts to distort Shivaji's history surpassed those by the British, yet they failed to diminish his enduring legacy.

Hosabale was speaking at an event marking the 350th anniversary of Shivaji's coronation, where four books on Shivaji's life and contributions were launched. He questioned whether Shivaji Maharaj belonged solely to the Marathas, pointing out that Shivaji himself never claimed this. Instead, he spoke of Hindavi Swaraj.
Shivaji's Vision for Hindavi Swaraj
Before British rule, Shivaji's empire was the largest in South Asia, spanning 250 million acres. Hosabale explained that Shivaji accepted his coronation not out of personal ambition but to demonstrate that Indian society was resilient and courageous. He aimed to show that India's Hindu society could rise again to reclaim its empire.
Shivaji felt compelled to send this message because Indian society was demoralised after losing its temples, culture, state, and language. There were doubts about the survival of its religion. Hosabale highlighted how Shivaji's governance was not about enjoying power but serving the people and the nation.
Good Governance and Economic Revival
Shivaji focused on agriculture policy, industry, international trade, and shipbuilding to rejuvenate Indian society. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister, wrote a foreword for Anil Mahadev Dave's book "Shivaji and Suraj," underscoring the relevance of good governance inspired by Shivaji even today.
Hosabale stressed the need to educate current and future generations about Shivaji's contributions through various means like textbooks and films. This would highlight his role in protecting the country and advancing its culture, religion, and civilisation.
Shivaji's Inclusive Governance
Former president Ram Nath Kovind also spoke at the event, praising Shivaji's vision of Hind Swaraj rather than Maratha Swaraj. He envisioned a united India with integrity. The main principle of his state was self-reliance, promoting businesses and industries.
Kovind noted that Shivaji's governance symbolised secularism by giving equal rights and respect to people of all religions. "I feel that the place Shivaji should have got in history has not been given. We should make every effort to give him his due place in history," he added.
The event underscored the need to recognise Shivaji's contributions accurately in history. Both Hosabale and Kovind highlighted how his leadership continues to inspire good governance and unity in India today.
