Sandip Ghosh Challenges CBI Probe In Supreme Court Over RG Kar Corruption Case

The Supreme Court has been approached by Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, in response to a decision by the Calcutta High Court that mandated a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into allegations of financial irregularities.

The plea, scheduled for hearing on September 6 before a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny surrounding Ghosh, particularly following the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor within the seminar hall of the medical college, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Earlier this week, a Kolkata court had remanded Dr Ghosh and three others to CBI custody for eight days as part of the investigation into the alleged financial misconduct. The CBI had requested a 10-day custody, citing the need to uncover a "large nexus" involved in the corruption case, as reported by Hindustan Times. The agency argued that further interrogation was necessary to expose the full extent of the alleged wrongdoing.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, Dr Ghosh was assaulted while being produced in court. The CBI has charged him under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (criminal conspiracy), Section 420 IPC (cheating and dishonesty), and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. He has been under interrogation by the CBI since August 16, in connection with both the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor and the financial irregularities alleged to have occurred during his tenure.

In a related development, the state health department issued an order on Tuesday placing Dr. Ghosh under suspension. The order stated that Dr. Ghosh's suspension was enacted under rule 7(1c) of the West Bengal Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules 1971, effective immediately, due to the ongoing criminal investigation against him.
