RPF Apprehends 916 Individuals Since 2021 to Prevent Illegal Migration in India
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has detained 916 individuals since 2021, including 586 Bangladeshi nationals and 318 Rohingyas, as part of its efforts to protect the country, according to the railway ministry. The ministry highlighted these figures on Sunday, emphasising the RPF's role in national security.

In June and July of the previous year, the RPF apprehended 88 Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants within the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) regions. Some of these individuals admitted to entering India illegally and were caught while travelling by train to places like Kolkata, according to a ministry statement.
Challenges in Monitoring Railways
Despite increased security at the Bangladesh border, reports from October 2024 indicate that illegal migrants continue to enter India. Assam is often used as a transit route, with railways being a preferred method for reaching other parts of the country. This situation presents significant challenges for Indian authorities in monitoring and securing the railway network against illegal infiltration.
The use of trains by infiltrators not only aids their movement across states but also complicates detection and prevention efforts. The ministry's press note highlighted these difficulties in managing unauthorised entries into India via railways.
Collaborative Efforts to Combat Illegal Migration
To address this issue, the RPF has strengthened its collaboration with key security agencies such as the Border Security Force (BSF), local police, and intelligence units. This inter-agency cooperation has improved operational efficiency, allowing for quicker identification and detention of those involved in illegal migration.
However, despite its significant contributions, the RPF lacks direct authority to prosecute those it apprehends. Instead, detained individuals are handed over to police and other authorised agencies for further legal action, as stated by the ministry.
The ongoing efforts by the RPF and its partners underscore the complexities involved in securing India's borders and transportation networks. These initiatives aim to enhance national security while addressing the persistent issue of illegal migration through coordinated actions.
