Officials Confirm Viral Video Shows Parking Lot Damage, Not Ratnagiri Railway Station Roof

A video showing rain damage to a newly installed roof and cladding went viral, with claims it was the Ratnagiri railway station's roof. Officials clarified that the damage occurred at an under-construction parking lot, not the station itself. The Public Works Department (PWD) of Maharashtra is responsible for this area, which is part of a larger development project.

Viral Video Misidentifies Roof Damage Location

Earlier, heavy rains and strong winds caused tin sheets to be blown away, affecting about 15 to 20 square feet of the roof in the construction zone. This incident led to widespread misinformation on social media. However, train operations at Ratnagiri station remain unaffected by these events.

Clarifications from Authorities

Both PIBFactCheck and Konkan Railway dismissed the misleading claims circulating online. PIBFactCheck stated on X that the video was misrepresented by @INCKerala, the official account of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. They confirmed that the station building remains intact and operational.

A spokesperson from Konkan Railway reiterated that the video shows the parking area under construction by PWD-Maharashtra. This area is located 150-200 meters from the main station building. The spokesperson urged people not to spread false information regarding the situation.

Ongoing Development Projects

The Maharashtra PWD is currently developing a garden, concourse, and parking area within the Ratnagiri station complex. These projects are part of a broader initiative to enhance infrastructure around the station. The state department has also signed an MoU with Konkan Railway for beautifying 36 railway stations' façades and entrances.

To counteract misinformation, Konkan Railway shared updated videos of the station platforms after the misleading footage gained traction online. This effort aims to reassure passengers and stakeholders about the station's operational status and ongoing improvements.

The recent incident highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media platforms. Authorities continue to work on enhancing facilities while ensuring accurate communication with the public.
