Agartala, March 3: Risa, a traditional handwoven cloth holds immense cultural significance for the indigenous communities of Tripura, has been bestowed with the prestigious Geographical Indication GI tag. This remarkable achievement was announced by the state's Chief Minister, Manik Saha, on Sunday, bringing immense joy and pride to the artisans, particularly those from the Killa Mahila cluster in Gomati district.

Recognition of Artisans' Skill and Heritage
Chief Minister Saha expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the artisans, acknowledging their exceptional skills and dedication in preserving the rich heritage of Tripura. He took to Facebook to share his elation, stating, "Heartiest congratulations to all artisans particularly those of the Killa Mahila Cluster promoted by TRLM on Tripura Risa getting GI Geographical Indication Tag. This will definitely help our signature garment to get international recognition."
Versatile Use and Cultural Significance
Risa holds a prominent place in the cultural fabric of Tripura, commonly seen during festivals and social gatherings of the tribes. Its versatility extends from being used as a headgear to a stole or an upper garment, adding a touch of elegance and tradition to any occasion.

Self-help groups SHGs received valuable support in the production of Risa, recognizing its heritage value. Tripura Rural Livelihood Missions TRLM former CEO Prasada Rao, a key figure behind this initiative, expressed his delight, stating, "Recently, we in association with NABARD applied for the GI tag for Risa, and ultimately it got the recognition. This will help in increasing its demand and price."
Promoting Risa's Popularity
The former Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb, played a pivotal role in popularizing Risa after assuming office in 2018. His efforts brought Risa to the forefront, making it a symbol of respect and honor. Today, Risa is proudly offered to dignitaries during government programs, showcasing the state's rich cultural heritage.
