Rekha Sharma's Tenure as NCW Chief Concludes After Notable Service
Rekha Sharma's tenure as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) concluded on Tuesday. Sharma, who is 60 years old, began her role as NCW chairperson on August 7, 2018. Reflecting on her journey, she remarked, "These nine years have been like a roller coaster ride for me. Coming from a humble background to finishing three terms in the NCW is a long way I have walked."

Sharma's association with the NCW started in August 2015 when she joined as a member. She was given additional charge as the NCW chairperson from September 29, 2017, before officially becoming its chief in 2018. In a post on X, she reiterated her sentiments about her tenure, stating, "These nine years have been like a roller coaster ride for me. Coming from a humble background to finishing three terms in the NCW is a long way I have walked."
Memorable Experiences and Challenges
During her time at the NCW, Sharma experienced numerous memorable moments. She shared how interactions with women across India left a lasting impact on her. "I will never forget the women in mental asylums who would not stop hugging me, the elderly lady in Vrindavan Ashram who embraced me like my mother, or the thousands of women in prison who shared their life stories with me," she said.
Sharma also spoke about the love and criticism she received during her tenure. She stated, "Along the way, I received an abundance of love, and I also learned how to handle criticism, which is an inevitable part of any work of this stature. Despite this, I have no regrets, only gratitude. Gratitude to everyone who stood by me, cheered me on, and even to those who criticised me constructively, as it kept me on my toes and pushed me to do better and more work."
Advocacy and Controversies
Throughout her tenure, Sharma was a strong advocate for gender sensitisation among police personnel. She emphasised their crucial role as the first point of contact for victims. However, her time in office was not without controversy. She faced criticism for alleged inaction during violence-hit Manipur last year and was often blamed for not taking action in BJP-ruled states—allegations she has consistently denied.
Sharma's journey with the NCW has been marked by both achievements and challenges. Her reflections highlight the personal growth and professional milestones she achieved during her time with the commission.
As Sharma steps down from her role, her legacy at the NCW will be remembered for both its impactful initiatives and the controversies that surrounded her tenure.
