Rajasthan Grapples with Severe Heat Wave, Churu Temperature Surpasses 50°C

Rajasthan is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record highs across the state. Churu witnessed a staggering 50.5 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperature of the season. Other cities are not far behind, with Jaipur hitting 46.6 degrees Celsius, Ganganagar at 49.4 degrees Celsius, and both Pilani Jhunjhunu and Phalodi recording temperatures of 49 degrees Celsius. Bikaner and Kota also felt the scorching heat with temperatures of 48.3 and 48.2 degrees Celsius respectively, as reported by the Meteorological Centre.

Rajasthans Severe Heat Wave

In the midst of this blistering heat, a concerning situation has emerged in Kota where 18 individuals, mostly without homes, were found deceased over the past four days. However, Kota's district administration has stated that the precise causes of these deaths will only be determined following the analysis of postmortem reports. Kota Collector Ravindra Goswami emphasized that there have been no heatwave-related fatalities in the district to date, according to the postmortem findings available to him.

The city's authorities are actively monitoring and implementing measures to mitigate the heat's impact on its residents. Among the unidentified deceased, 14 bodies were located in the mortuary of Kota MBS hospital last week, with autopsies conducted on 10 individuals by Monday evening. Additional bodies were discovered on Tuesday, further straining the city's medical facilities.

In response to the severe temperatures, local organizations and forums have initiated efforts to provide relief through drinking water distribution, cooler installations, and setting up shaded areas in public spaces. Moreover, coaching institutes in Kota have received directives to halt all educational activities between 12 pm and 3 pm to protect students from the worst of the daytime heat.

Dr RP Meena, Superintendent at New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) in Kota, reported that measures including the placement of 60 additional water campers and 10 jumbo coolers in hospital wards have been taken to offer some respite from the heat.

The current heatwave has not only brought discomfort but also broken previous temperature records. Churu's maximum temperature reached a scorching 50.5 degrees Celsius, which is significantly above normal and just shy of its all-time high of 50.8 degrees Celsius recorded on June 1, 2019. Pilani also set a new record with temperatures soaring to 49 degrees Celsius, surpassing its previous high set in May 1999.

The Meteorological Department has indicated that the entire state is under severe heat conditions, with temperatures ranging from two to eight degrees Celsius above normal for this time of year. However, there is a slight glimmer of hope as forecasts predict a decrease in day temperatures by two to four degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours.
