Ashok Gehlot Criticizes Incomplete Women's Reservation Bill Ahead of Elections

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot recently expressed his views on the women's reservation bill, stating that while it has been largely accepted by all, it remains incomplete without a provision for OBC (Other Backward Classes) reservation and the implementation of caste census. He made these comments during a press interaction after an event in Jaipur.

Political Gain or Genuine Reform?

Womens Reservation Bill

Gehlot raised concerns about the timing and motivation behind introducing this bill. He suggested that it was primarily brought forward with an eye on upcoming elections, under pressure from opposition parties. The Chief Minister said, "If they [the Centre] wanted, they could have done it nine years ago because they had full majority." His statement implies that the central government had ample opportunity to pass such legislation when they enjoyed undisputed power but did not do so.

Caste Census: A Necessary Measure

The Rajasthan CM also highlighted the importance of conducting a caste census. This comes in response to demands being raised by various sections of society and political alliances across India who believe such data would help ensure more equitable distribution of resources among different social groups. Gehlot stated, "It is understood that if the opposition India alliance is raising the issue of caste census, then caste census is also important."

Call for Inclusive Reservation

Gehlot further urged the Government of India to heed calls from Sonia Gandhi and many other opposition parties for extending reservations to SC/ST/OBC communities within 33 percent quota set aside for women. According to him, only then can all castes and classes get equal opportunities to participate in governance structures.

A Message for PM Modi

In response to questions regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit on September 25th, Gehlot said he hopes both PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah would take steps to address the issues he raised. However, he did not elaborate on what specific actions he expects from them.

In conclusion, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's remarks point to a broader debate about social justice and representation in India. While the women's reservation bill is indeed a significant step towards gender equality, it has also highlighted the need for more inclusive policies that account for caste-based disparities. The call for implementing caste census and extending reservations within women's quota to SC/ST/OBC communities underscores this demand. It remains to be seen how these suggestions will be received by the central government and what measures they might adopt in response.
