Railways to have 10 per cent women in RPF

New Delhi, Feb 12: Focusing on the issue of women's safety and security on trains, railways will strengthen its women squad and have 10 per cent reservation for the fairer sex in RPF recruitment.

"It is our responsibility to provide safety and security for passengers and also protecting their belongings. I have asked RPF to organise training for its personnel to tackle the issues relating to passengers and specially for women passengers," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said here after launching four new trains and extending the service of a train through remote control.

Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha said "We have reserved 10 per cent for women in RPF. There will be 10 per cent recruitment out of the total recruitments made in RPF."

Prabhu further said that steps are being taken to strengthen the RPF's women squad Mahila Bahini to provide security to women passengers in rail premises.

"We have also launched an App for women security," he added. Highlighting the need for more trains, Prabhu said "The number of passengers is increasing day by day. People are travelling for their livelihood. We need to renew assets including new lines to have more trains and for this investment is required. Our efforts is to provide maximum trains service and for that we need to have more tracks."

In order to equip Railway Protection Force with advanced investigation method, Prabhu said, "The state governments have forensic laboratories, we are planning to link it with RPF."

He also said plans are afoot to have provisions for giving reward to those RPF personnel who are doing good work. Prabhu flagged off four new trains and extension of one train by remote control.

The new trains are Bhavnagar-Delhi Sarai Rohilla Link Express (Weekly), Ranchi-NewJalpaiguri Express (Weekly), Santragachi-Jhargram MEMU (5 days a week), and Anuppur-Ambikapur MEMU (6 days a week) as well as extension of Jhajha-Patna MEMU to Jasidih.

All these trains are part of the Budget announcements. So far Prabhu has flagged off 20 new trains during this week through remote control.
