Indian Railways Forms Expert Committees to Boost Maintenance Regime
In response to the Balasore rail accident, the Indian Railways has set up two one-man expert committees. The Tripathi Committee will focus on improving the maintenance regime of rolling stock, while the Lahoti Committee will concentrate on enhancing track inspection and maintenance practices.
Following the most devastating rail accident in two decades that occurred in Odisha's Balasore in June, the Indian Railways has taken a proactive step towards improving its maintenance and inspection regimes. In an announcement made on September 21, it was revealed that two one-man expert committees have been established with this aim. These committees are led by former Railway Board chairmen Vinay Kumar Tripathi and Anil Kumar Lahoti respectively.
Vinay Kumar Tripathi Committee on Rolling Stock Maintenance

The committee headed by Vinay Kumar Tripathi is tasked with creating a roadmap for enhancement of the maintenance regime concerning rolling stock. The primary objective of this committee is to suggest an action plan for efficient deployment of human resources to improve productivity levels within the railways' operations. It will also look into establishing integrated depots dedicated to maintaining locomotives and all types of rolling stock.
Additionally, the Tripathi Committee will focus on universalisation and standardisation of maintenance facilities for various components such as locomotives, freight stocks, distributive power rakes, coaching stocks etc. Another significant aspect under their purview involves developing an action plan for transitioning from preventive maintenance practices to condition-based or predictive maintenance regimes.
Anil Kumar Lahoti Committee on Track Inspection and Maintenance
The second expert committee led by Anil Kumar Lahoti aims at improving track inspection methods along with overall track maintenance procedures. This committee will review existing practices related to track inspection and upkeep while suggesting improvements wherever necessary.
Apart from formulating a strategic roadmap for bettering track inspection methodologies, the Lahoti Committee has also been entrusted with reviewing the current organisational structure of track maintenance staff. They are expected to draw up a revised structure or strategy if required so as to bolster efficiency in handling routine inspections and addressing any issues promptly.
This initiative by the Indian Railways is a significant step towards enhancing safety measures across its extensive network. By setting up these expert committees, the railways are looking to leverage the expertise and experience of seasoned professionals in their quest for improved maintenance and inspection practices.
In conclusion, these proactive steps taken by the Railways demonstrate a commitment towards improving operational efficiency and safety standards. The outcomes from these expert committee reports will likely shape future strategies for rail maintenance and inspection, potentially leading to safer, more efficient railway operations across India. As we await their recommendations, it's clear that this move signifies a positive shift towards making Indian railways safer and more reliable for millions of daily commuters.
