Railway Police Chiefs Convene to Enhance Crime Control and Passenger Safety Measures

The 6th All-India Conference, focusing on passenger safety in railways, concluded with discussions on using modern technologies. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) explored ways to enhance security for passengers and railway properties. The RPF operates under the railway ministry, while the GRP is managed by state governments to investigate crimes and coordinate with the RPF.

Railway Police Focus on Passenger Safety

The conference, organised by the RPF, brought together DGPs, ADGPs, and senior GRP officers from various states and union territories. Representatives from the Ministry of Railways also participated. "This important gathering marked a concerted effort to address the growing challenges of crime control on Indian Railways and to strengthen collective mechanisms to ensure the safety and security of millions of railway passengers commuting daily through its vast network," stated a press note.

Focus on Crime Prevention

A significant theme was improving intelligence sharing and developing joint operational strategies. The aim was to counteract criminal activities exploiting the extensive railway network. Enhancing inter-agency coordination was also a priority to address these challenges effectively.

Efforts were made to intensify passenger awareness campaigns. These initiatives aim to educate travellers about common scams used by thieves and fraudsters. The conference resolved to convert theft complaints lodged on the Rail Madad portal into formal FIRs seamlessly, enhancing detection rates and discouraging repeat offences.

Technology-Driven Solutions

Police chiefs discussed dismantling organised interstate criminal networks targeting high-value passenger belongings. They deliberated on deploying proactive surveillance, coordinated operations across states, and technology-backed solutions like facial recognition systems.

The need for a unified response system among GRP units across different states and union territories was emphasised. This approach aims to prevent jurisdictional gaps often exploited by offenders. Such coordination is crucial for effective crime prevention in the railway network.

Addressing Crimes Against Women

Special attention was given to crimes against women passengers. Participants agreed on implementing robust preventive measures such as targeted patrolling, CCTV cameras in stations and coaches, and deploying Meri Saheli teams. These initiatives aim to enhance security for women travellers.

The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration between various agencies to ensure passenger safety. By leveraging technology and improving coordination, authorities aim to create a safer environment for millions of daily commuters across India's vast railway network.
