BJP Critiques Rahul Gandhi's Sambhal Visit As Political Spectacle Amid Security Issues
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of staging a spectacle during his attempted visit to Sambhal. The BJP claims this was an effort to appeal to the Muslim vote bank. Uttar Pradesh police stopped Gandhi at the Delhi-UP border, preventing his entry into the violence-affected city in the BJP-governed state.
Uttar Pradesh's deputy chief minister, Keshav Prasad Maurya, criticised Rahul Gandhi for his attempt to visit Sambhal. Maurya remarked, "Both Akhilesh and Rahul are trying to do politics to get Muslim votes. They are enacting a drama. The decline of SP and Congress is certain. SP will become 'Samaptawadi Party' and there will be Congress-mukt Bharat." He attributed the Sambhal violence, which resulted in four deaths on November 24, to rivalry between a Samajwadi Party MLA and MP.

Political Tensions Over Sambhal Visit
BJP's national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi commented on Gandhi's actions, stating that he aimed for media attention rather than genuine concern. Trivedi said, "Rahul Gandhi had gone there without taking his partner in the INDI Alliance with him just to grab media attention. There is a conflict going on between the two parties." He suggested that Gandhi's visit was more about securing a "better photo-op" than showing sympathy.
Trivedi further elaborated on the security protocols surrounding Gandhi's movements. As Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gandhi holds Z-plus ASL security, which requires prior notification before visits due to its high level of protection. Trivedi noted that only the Home Minister and Defence Minister share this security level with him.
Security Concerns and Political Motives
Trivedi criticised Gandhi for not informing authorities ahead of his planned visit to Sambhal. He stated, "If you honestly wanted to go there (Sambhal) and he had some sympathy, he would have given an intimation (to the authorities) in advance…You did not have any intention to go there. You just did a formality and then returned." This lack of communication raised questions about Gandhi's true intentions.
The BJP leader also highlighted competition within the INDI alliance as a driving force behind such political manoeuvres. According to Trivedi, both Congress and Samajwadi Party are vying for their core voter base within this alliance. He remarked that their actions lacked genuine empathy for those affected by the violence.
Rahul Gandhi expressed discontent after being turned back at Ghazipur border, claiming that his rights as Leader of the Opposition were violated by authorities. The unrest in Sambhal began during a court-ordered survey investigating remnants of a Hindu temple inside a Mughal-era mosque.
