BJP Asks Rahul Gandhi to Address Goa Candidate's Constitution Comment

In a recent development that has stirred the political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to address comments made by the party's South Goa Lok Sabha candidate, Viriato Fernandes. Fernandes controversially stated that the Indian Constitution was "forced upon" Goa after its liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961. BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde highlighted this remark during a press conference, emphasizing the need for clarification from the Congress leadership.

BJP Queries Rahul on Goa Remark

Tawde pointed out the apparent contradiction within the Congress party, where on one side, Goa leaders advocate for a change in the Constitution, while on the other, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge accuses the BJP of planning to alter the Constitution if it secures more than 400 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP general secretary accused the opposition of targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi with baseless statements due to a lack of substantial criticism.

The controversy extends to discussions around inheritance tax, with Tawde criticizing the Congress's stance. He suggested that the revenue collected through such taxes would benefit specific communities, referencing former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's comments on the Muslim community without directly naming it.

In response to these allegations, senior Congressman and Leader of Opposition in the Goa Assembly, Yuri Alemao, defended his party's position. Alemao announced that Congress aims to amend the 10th Schedule of the Constitution to prevent defections among MPs and legislators. This statement was made amidst accusations from Tawde about Congress undermining constitutional integrity through mass defections and other actions.

This exchange underscores a deepening rift between India's major political parties, with both sides accusing each other of misinterpreting or intending to alter the nation's Constitution for political gain. The debate brings to light critical issues surrounding constitutional amendments, party defections, and the political use of inheritance tax policies.
