Drug Smuggling Case: Punjab Cong Leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira Sent To Police Custody Till Sept 30

The Fazlika's Jalalabad court on Thursday announced judicial custody of Punjab Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira till September 30. Khaira was detained by the Punjab Police early today over alleged drug-related case.

Amidst the political rift between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress Party over seat sharing in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Khaira was detained by the Punjab Police after the police raided his house over an alleged drug-related case.

Khaira took to his social media account to show how the Jalalabad police officials raided his residence and arrested him over an alleged 2015 drug-related case.

Khaira's Facebook account shows the Congress leader arguing with the police during the raid. Khaira was seen charging the police to show an arrest warrant and inquiring them to reveal the reason behind the arrest.

Reacting to Khaira's queries, the police official who introduces himself as DSP Jalalabad Acchru Ram Sharma is seen informing Khaira that he is being arrested for an old NDPS case.

The Jalalabad Police on Thursday arrested Khaira from his residence during a raid related to an alleged drug-related case registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

This comes after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal announced that his party would contest all 13 seats in the Lok Sabha elections following which Congress declared that it would contest all the seats in Punjab alone. Tensions mounted between both the parties who are members of the Opposition Bloc INDIA.

The Shiromani Akali Dal took to social media to condemn the arrest, tagging it as a "political vendetta". "Political differences aside - Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar condemns the arrest borne out of the witch hunt and political vendetta against Bholath MLA and a very respected Sukhpal Jhaira Ji, a fierce critic of Bhagwant Mann and AAP led Punjab government. What promised to be a 'badlav' is turning out to be a horror show," the post on X (formerly Twitter) reads.

Meanwhile, Khaira was recently in the headlines for taking a dig at AAP MP Raghav Chadha for spending huge money on his lavish wedding. Khaira took to his X handle, formerly Twitter, "Being a public figure he is answerable for such mega spendings."
